Our solidified script

Summer Lovin’

written by Natalia Szabo and Mariana Sanin

Sadly the script web did not work when I transported it over, however, this is still the same script just formatted differently. :)

HOWIE: "Honestly all i know is that I want to have something of my own"

NATI: "that's respectable... anything specific?"

HOWIE: "don't make fun of me, but I've always wanted a family bakery, just the idea of like working with the people you love, making it not feel like a job. I also just want to make sure my family is taken care of, i know how it feels to not have much growing up."

NATI: "aw thats cute, its not what i expected"

NATI: are you gonna get that ?

HOWIE: no it’s okay

Continues to spam his phone

NATI: I really think you should get it

HOWIE: I said it’s fine

Nati gets a weird vibe and goes to grab and give howie his phone when she sees a picture of another girl with the name babe on it

Natis heart drops and her expression changes

NATI: are you serious?

HOWIE: what?

Nati shows the phone

HOWIE: uh

Nati: UH? UHH? Wow I just wasted a whole day with a cheater and a liar. You’re a piece of shit.

Print component

POST CARD RESEARCH

Mariana and I chose to do a short film for a final project, meaning we would have to do a double sided post card as our physical advertisement. These postcards are typical used as an advertisement to pass around at a film festival. Here are some elements our postcard must contain:
  • Title
  • Intriguing visuals
  • Key art
  • Directors name
  • The location, as well as its date and time
  • Social Media information
All of the components mentioned are ways to connect with and gain more people from the directed target audience. In order to gain more knowledge and useful techniques for these postcards, doing some research would be very beneficial. I decided that I wanted to research postcards of others that have carried out this project for Aice Media A level. This allowed me to visit their past blogs and get context of their film before seeing the postcard with very little information. I was also able to make deeper connections to their postcards development.

Beginning with the student made short film SPLIT. I skimmed over Kavya Marian, the directors blog page to get a gist of what this short film was about. The short film is about a 16 year old girl who suffers from a personality disorder, where she has various personalities. It was said that this mental illness descended from sexual assault from her father in her childhood.

-summary of content

Regarding the postcard itself, it does capture elements of the film, however, I would’ve changed a couple of things for my liking. Starting with the conventions, I really liked the title font looking split, like the title. Not only was it clever, but also visually engaging, which is important for these postcards. Under this title, they included the tagline “ENTER THE WORLD OF A GIRL WHO IS NEVER ALONE”. The addition of the tagline is a pleasant factor, as it gives some context, as well as creates assumptions as to what the film may be about. A simple somewhat contextual sentence like this can further lure in the audience. Furthermore, the front of the post card contains a bold picture of what I’m guessing is the main character of the film. It is important to use an engaging picture to ensure the audience will follow all of the other conventions within the post card. If something isn’t visually engaging, the person usually will not look into the rest of the writing or information on it. Just like trailers. If the trailer isn’t interesting or visually appealing, the person viewing usually will not watch the movie. I liked how the director included “A totally UNIQUE and GRIPPING short film.” These two words, especially bolded add emphasis to elements of the film that make it strong. Words like unique and gripping are both words appealing to the targeted audiences awareness, and even later interaction. The inclusion of the main film festival in the front (Pune Short Film Festival) is a major component for the postcard. The film and everything previously mentioned becomes useless without information about a location where this movie can be viewed. The main purpose of a postcard is to get an audience to view your film, so without a location, this cannot be fulfilled. Overall, this was a very well done postcard and a great example for research.

The only components I would’ve changed that caught my eye, was the back of the postcard. The back of the postcard was not visually intriguing. It was boring in my eyes as there was no picture and the color theme placed as the background was very dull. I did however like how there were more film festival screenings on the back. This can broaden the ability to watch for the audience. Another feature I really liked was the inclusion of the QR code on the back under the contact information. (Also a key component so scouters can reach director and audience can ask questions pertaining to the film)

For our films postcard, I would like to almost every element displayed within this example. My favorite element that I’m so excited to adopt is the bold picture on the front of the card.

ON TO THE NEXT

This is another postcard advertisement I researched about a vr sci-fi short film. This post card did a great job at relating to the futuristic and technological theme this short film aims to achieve. I really like the visual elements within this post card it is very visually pleasing in my opinion. The title is big and bold followed by the tagline “YOUR INVITATION TO THE FUTURE OF EDUCATION” below. Under the tagline there’s a piece of text that says, “Your ideal High School experience brought to you by Virtu tech”. This sentence gives further context to the audience as to what the short film may be about. They included important logos, as well as the top film festivals the short film will be screened at which as I said previously, is crucial to obtain ones audience. They even decided to add more film festivals to the back to again, widen their audience. The back of the postcard contained unique elements as well, the loading symbol for instance. This was a clever visual that works great with the purpose of the short film. Furthermore, the logos followed by the contact information was a good guide to allow postcard viewers to quickly locate this information. This is a technique I believe Mari and I should adopt. Something I was not much of a fan of was the staring feature. While watching the short film, there were only really 3 main characters and the protagonist was the main MAIN focus, so I believe the inclusion of who’s staring isn’t that valuable. If the actors were the main marketing scheme, on the other hand, pictures of them could’ve been useful, as opposed to a list of names. I really enjoyed the overall postcard, I believe the student did an exceptional job!

New Research Film (MY FAVORITE MOVIE EVER!)

I was actually extremely content with the new concept we will be carrying out, due to the fact that it is similar to my favorite movie… LA LA LANDDDD

La La Land is my favorite romance film of all time. This is because the acting is phenomenal, visuals are absolutely beautiful, and the story is very realistic. Sebastian and Mia have seen each other before and it’s like the universe keep drawing them together. When they finally attempt to build a romantic relationship, hard decisions and obstacles get in their way. I don’t want to give too much away, so I’ll just say it has a very strong and unexpected climax, falling action, and resolution. Most romance films end with a happily ever after, but this one, however, ends in a different way. Overall, there are so many elements within this film that are worth analyzing/researching to use in our short film. So, that’s exactly what I plan on doing.

Beginning with the stories appeal, as I said before, Sebastian and Mia are always brought together by odd chances. Mariana and I would like to use this after Nati and Howie get into their big argument. It allows some inspiration as to how we can make them run into one another. Like when Sebastian and Mia saw each other driving or at a party, as shown in the picture above.

The main reason I’m using La La Land as a film to research, is the fact that they also divide the films content by season. It can be inferred that the reason behind splitting the movie by seasons,  this was done to represent the circle of life. Where that special someone can become no-one in an instance.

WINTER 1

In the season of winter, Sebastian and Mia meet each other for the first time in a road rage conflict. (it was so cute). It is also the season where Mia falls in love with Sebastian after hearing him play the piano solo.  For the most part, this section of the film was very saturated, despite the fact that winter is usually dimmed down, because the place they live in (California), doesn't experience major change throughout the seasons.  Mia and Sebastians costume choice, however, consisted of blues and darker tone apparel.

WINTER 2

In the second winter, the resolution of La La Land takes place. Mia and Sebastian have their futures set and see each other, nodding in approval to move on and that they're okay. The composition remains the same, darker tones and cooler colors. For our film, this is the winter we will be following. Winter will be the season Howie and Nati re-connect with one another. That's why we don't want it to seem sad, but more   of a lighthearted acceptance. The only difference is we are going to make this part a little brighter since there's hope in Nati and Howie's future. (In La La Land they just parted ways)

SPRING

In spring, the tone of colors switch dramatically. Warmer tones are brightened, the characters wear bright and bold colors like reds, yellows, and more. This is the season in which Mia and Sebastian begin to express their interest for each other through comedy. It's one of the more fun seasons within the film. As of now, we aren't sure if we want to use spring as a season, but probably not.

SUMMER

SUMMERRRR!! Not only was this my favorite season in La La Land, but it will also be my favorite season in our short film. This is the season of romance, other known as summer loving. In La La Land, this is the season where Mia and Sebastian begin to develop their relationship heavily. Going out on dates, romantic gestures, and most importantly, happiness. The color scheme and films composition In this season is very similar to spring. Warm tones tightened, pretty displays, colorful mis-en-scene, etc. I believe some of the most gorgeous visuals were captured in this season. In our short film, summer will be the prettiest season visually and romantically for the viewers. All of the romantic moments Howie and Nati share, will take place during summer. I get so excited just thinking about it I cannot wait to see the execution of it.

FALL

In La La Land, fall was the season that Mia and Seb go through tragedy. They see that their paths are no longer colliding and they begin to argue a lot more. The film colors aren't as happy, the costuming dark, and the colors a bit less saturated. Not exactly the same but somewhat similarly, this will be a rougher season for the two. Nati is in a new relationship, while Howie is freshly out of his relationship that he ended because he was truly in love with. This creates tension between the two, shown not only by their expressions, but also through the films visuals.

To better our film, Mari and I will watch the film to further gain knowledge on techniques/elements we should adopt in our short film

COMPLETE CHANGE

 Hey guys, our idea changed…again.

After our group sessions, Mariana and I regrouped and decided to ask for the opinions of more classmates.  Our good friend Samantha Duarte read our finished script about for our solidified idea. She brought a crucial component to our attention that completely flew by our head.

A film is composed of a 5 elements for the plot

  • Exposition
  • Rising action
  • Climax
  • Falling action
  • Resolution
Our films script would only cover the first four, there is no resolution. It made us realize it made the ending feel unfinished. We were supposed to have Nati just leave Howie at the beach when she found out that he had a girlfriend the whole time. However, this idea is a close, but it feels like more closure must be added. SO, we decided to change add/take away from our concept once again. In order to make our film have all the plot elements, we decided to add seasons to the film. The film will open with summer, to fall, and lastly winter. The first three will be taking place in summer, as it sets the tone for most of the film (summer love gone wrong). The idea was that in Fall they see each other and Howie broke up with his girlfriend because he couldn’t stop thinking about Nati, while she moved on and has a boyfriend. We aren’t specifically sure about where they will see one another or how it’s going to go just yet. All we know is we want to show Nati and Howie making eye contact to build tension between the two. In Winter, we know they will see each other at a friend hangout, where he asks if she’s still with her boyfriend since he isn’t with her. Obviously, the’ve broken up and the reason is she never really liked her that much. From there, either they begin talking as one approaches the other or we end it at them saying hi to each other. We aren’t sure if we want to add the last season, due to the fact that it might be too long and even unnecessary. We’ve already shown them happy with one another, this will leave the audience wondering what will happen next, which is a concept much films carry or should carry.

Since we’re deciding to adopt this idea, I decided it’s important to research another film with the same or similar idea. This is because lighting, composition, and mise-en-scene elements change depending on the season. Researching a film will give me a visual representation of this, thus allowing me to gain inspiration.
It will be a longer plan that definitely involves more thought, but I believe it will be very successful!

Group Discussions

GROUP MEETING ACTIVITY

It’s crucial to get input from other!!!

In class today, we studied each others blog postings, as well as gave each other advice/recommendations pertaining to our ideas. For my project specifically, I believe this meeting was needed, due to the fact that not only are my peers extremely helpful and insightful, but also because they fit the age of my targeted audience. That is why I wanted to hear back from them to know if all my components were form fitting and intriguing. Beginning with myself, I shared my blog url, along with my elaboration of what Mari and I have planned and ideated for our short film. I summarized most of my blogs and they viewed the postings as I spoke.

After presenting my short film promo, I received very positive and helpful feedback. They all agreed that it was the kind of film that would match my target audience, and that the films concept was adorable. The only element pertaining to the film concept that was critiqued, was the fact that the beginning of the film didn’t match our current idea of the end. We were planning on closing the sequence when Nati found out Howie had a girlfriend, however Male Ojeda brought to y attention that the ending of the film doesn’t match the end. “Why are you going to start it of her looking at the picture ?” And  “Does it correlate?” I thought to myself, how can I make the beginning significant? Then I thought of the idea to make the beginning of the film where she looks at the photo her many years later, when she’s either at her job or at university. Although it would signify her reminiscing without doing either of the things mentioned above, using setting and mis-en-scene elements would make the intention more clear.

Besides this, there wasn’t much improvement suggestions said about my pitch, every other component and element was really enjoyed! HAPPY NATI 😄

I really enjoyed this activity as I gave out and received informational advice to/from my peers in order for us to achieve the highest potential we can. I’m excited for my projects progression, as well as my peers!

Target Audience Research

Identifying a target audience is crucial in a digital forms marketing, film elements, and promotion. This is why I’ve decided to do more research about our targeted audience.

Romance in action:

(I just love Bridgerton)

Romance movies have definitely widened in their target audience. My research has revealed that in older times, romance films were targeted more towards the older woman population. Now, however, due to multiple reasons romance films have become directed more towards younger generations, while still maintaining the older ones as well. It is said to be from 18-54, however, from what I know and have seen, I believe it extends from teenage girls as young as 13 to woman in their 60’s. I can personally infer this, due to the fact that my friends and I have been huge fans of romance films since middle school (12+) and my grandmother at age 61, is still fond of romance films. A big reason as to why newer generations like Gen Z are making their way into becoming the new target audience, is their passion for reading romance novels. Since covid 19, reading books have become much more common for young teenage girls. Some examples of these romance novels include, “It Ends With Us”, “The Summer I Turned Pretty”, and “Icebreaker.” Although not all, many of these novels have been turned into movies or shows. Of course, the teenage fan base would be lured into watching. Branching off of this, the algorithm of these viewers whether it be social media or streaming platforms, will present similar films to the one viewed. (Romance)

Moreover, social media has become extremely widespread and addictive, especially for newer generations like Gen Z. Since this is the case, the content given or shown to social media users, match what they enjoy. For instance, I love romance films but I never put anything pertaining to romance on my social media. One day, I saw a trailer on my feed and really enjoyed it. I then proceeded to research more about the film, as. The plot and actors intrigued me. I ended up watching the film with my friends that also enjoy romances. Ever since then, I’ve gotten multiple romantic quotes, movie trailers, and even more actors that have roles within these types of films. This occurrence most definitely happens to many people globally which further explains how newer generations can evolve into romance lovers.

Our target audience: Our audience for the short film will be 13-28, because our films conventions appeal more towards these ages. Its marketing and promotional aspects also attract more youthful ages.
:)

Turn of the script

 So…

Our idea took a bit if a turn after meeting with our professor.

Original idea: Originally, our idea was to create a short film about summer love. It was going to start out with Nati looking at pictures on her phone at a cafe of a group of girls enjoying their beach day together. She cooks in, and the picture becomes present time. As the girls are sun bathing and taking in the perfect beach water, Nati, the protagonist catches herself looking over at this boy not too far away. As the girls walked out of the water, a boy approaches them and asks if they were up to play volleyball with him and his guys friends. The girls say yes since they have ran out of things to do and enjoy the company of teenage boys. As they approach the boys, Nati realizes the boy she kept glancing at was there. They begin to play, and throughout the match, Howie, second protagonist, and Nati keep looking at one another. As Nati got tired of the game and left, Howie, of course, joined her. They converse in a playful manner and seem to have a strong tension. The whole group of guys and girls decide to go to eat, and while doing so, Natis ex-boyfriend approaches her and obviously, annoys her. When Howie realizes, he stands up for her. She finds this very admirable, and from then, they exchange numbers before they depart after the dinner. Soon after, clips of them hanging out and having a romantic/fun summer together are placed. We still didn’t know specifically what yet, but that was the idea. Towards the end of the short film, Nati finds out Howie had a girlfriend the entire time. They get into a huge argument and in order to “explain himself”, Howie asked to meet up at this cafe. Shortly after, we’re taken to the same cafe the short film started with and Nati is seen looking at the pictures of her friends and her situationship throughout the summer. When she realizes it isn’t worth getting hurt, she leaves and the film ends.

After talking to our teacher and proposing this idea, she gave us some advice. Long story short, we realized our short film idea was too long. It seemed more of like a whole movie as opposed to a short film of 5 minutes.

New idea: So our new idea is still similar to the first, but it’s much more realistic for the time frame we were given.

As shown in the pictures, the whole beginning remains the same up until the restaurant. Instead of going off all together, Nati and Howie leave off on their own to eat. Nati picks a restaurant and they enjoy their time and converse with one another. After that, they’re shown walking around the beach together talking some more. Here, many shots of the setting will be taken, as beautiful visuals are crucial in these types of films. Later on, the two watch the sunset together and while talking about their futures, flirt some more, and share an intimate moment, they get interrupted by Howie’s girlfriend that Nati had no idea about. The ending, I’m still not sure, since we’re still developing the script. I’m sure it will be amazing! We cannot wait to show more than just a snippet of our script!!!
