I was actually extremely content with the new concept we will be carrying out, due to the fact that it is similar to my favorite movie… LA LA LANDDDD
La La Land is my favorite romance film of all time. This is because the acting is phenomenal, visuals are absolutely beautiful, and the story is very realistic. Sebastian and Mia have seen each other before and it’s like the universe keep drawing them together. When they finally attempt to build a romantic relationship, hard decisions and obstacles get in their way. I don’t want to give too much away, so I’ll just say it has a very strong and unexpected climax, falling action, and resolution. Most romance films end with a happily ever after, but this one, however, ends in a different way. Overall, there are so many elements within this film that are worth analyzing/researching to use in our short film. So, that’s exactly what I plan on doing.
Beginning with the stories appeal, as I said before, Sebastian and Mia are always brought together by odd chances. Mariana and I would like to use this after Nati and Howie get into their big argument. It allows some inspiration as to how we can make them run into one another. Like when Sebastian and Mia saw each other driving or at a party, as shown in the picture above.
The main reason I’m using La La Land as a film to research, is the fact that they also divide the films content by season. It can be inferred that the reason behind splitting the movie by seasons, this was done to represent the circle of life. Where that special someone can become no-one in an instance.
WINTER 1
In the season of winter, Sebastian and Mia meet each other for the first time in a road rage conflict. (it was so cute). It is also the season where Mia falls in love with Sebastian after hearing him play the piano solo. For the most part, this section of the film was very saturated, despite the fact that winter is usually dimmed down, because the place they live in (California), doesn't experience major change throughout the seasons. Mia and Sebastians costume choice, however, consisted of blues and darker tone apparel.
WINTER 2
In the second winter, the resolution of La La Land takes place. Mia and Sebastian have their futures set and see each other, nodding in approval to move on and that they're okay. The composition remains the same, darker tones and cooler colors. For our film, this is the winter we will be following. Winter will be the season Howie and Nati re-connect with one another. That's why we don't want it to seem sad, but more of a lighthearted acceptance. The only difference is we are going to make this part a little brighter since there's hope in Nati and Howie's future. (In La La Land they just parted ways)
SPRING
In spring, the tone of colors switch dramatically. Warmer tones are brightened, the characters wear bright and bold colors like reds, yellows, and more. This is the season in which Mia and Sebastian begin to express their interest for each other through comedy. It's one of the more fun seasons within the film. As of now, we aren't sure if we want to use spring as a season, but probably not.
SUMMER
SUMMERRRR!! Not only was this my favorite season in La La Land, but it will also be my favorite season in our short film. This is the season of romance, other known as summer loving. In La La Land, this is the season where Mia and Sebastian begin to develop their relationship heavily. Going out on dates, romantic gestures, and most importantly, happiness. The color scheme and films composition In this season is very similar to spring. Warm tones tightened, pretty displays, colorful mis-en-scene, etc. I believe some of the most gorgeous visuals were captured in this season. In our short film, summer will be the prettiest season visually and romantically for the viewers. All of the romantic moments Howie and Nati share, will take place during summer. I get so excited just thinking about it I cannot wait to see the execution of it.
FALL
In La La Land, fall was the season that Mia and Seb go through tragedy. They see that their paths are no longer colliding and they begin to argue a lot more. The film colors aren't as happy, the costuming dark, and the colors a bit less saturated. Not exactly the same but somewhat similarly, this will be a rougher season for the two. Nati is in a new relationship, while Howie is freshly out of his relationship that he ended because he was truly in love with. This creates tension between the two, shown not only by their expressions, but also through the films visuals.
To better our film, Mari and I will watch the film to further gain knowledge on techniques/elements we should adopt in our short film
